Welcome to "The Evolution of an Emerging Librarian".

My name is Mary Lee (she/her). I live in Chicago and currently work as a Children's Associate with the Chicago Public Library. I am enrolled in the MLIS program at Dominican University. After earning my degree, I would like to become a children's librarian.  I have continued to advance my reading advisory skills, and find great joy in helping people find the perfect book. Whether it was getting swept up in Nancy Drew mystery or discovering magic at Hogwarts, reading was always an escape for me as a young girl. Becoming a children's librarian would allow me to pass on my love for reading to the next generation, as they become immersed in their own adventures.

My previous experience blogging was for a MLIS course on library materials for children, where I evaluated a selection of children's books. Looking back, my previous blog followed a very specific formula, with not much freedom for personal reflection. I aim to create more engaging posts with this blog.

Outside of work and school, I enjoy baking, going to concerts, rating movies on my Letterboxd account, and all things pop culture. I am easily convinced to try new things. Diamond art, ceramics, and jewelry making are among some hobbies I have tried in the past year. This summer, I am going to to give crocheting a try. I'll keep you updated on how that goes! And, of course, I love to read. Keeping up with Reese Witherspoon's book club is a goal of mine (although I have fallen quite behind).

I would say I have a good relationship with technology. I try to keep up-to-date with what is trendy and am quick to adapt to new technologies. I use social media to keep informed on current events and global news, and to stay in contact with friends and family. I have accounts on Instagram, Twitter, and Snapchat; however, I am not a very active public poster. Apps that I use daily would be Duolingo, TikTok, and Calm (a meditation app). Like many others, I do see the need for finding a balance when using technology in everyday life. It can be easy to get swept up on my phone, and before I know it, I have been scrolling my "For You Page" on TikTok for hours!

While I am not employed at an educational institution, I do use technology at my current place of work. Technologies I use include the Libby App, the Chicago Public Library App, the library's databases, Polaris Leap (circulation tool), E-Readers, and Khan Academy. While the Chicago Public Library's primary form of communication is through email, all employees have access and are encouraged to use Microsoft Teams to collaborate with each other. Recently, I have become introduced to new technologies through our Teen YouMedia space. The space includes a 3D printer, a vinyl cutting machine, a Nintendo Switch gaming system, and a digital camera. It's been fun trying out these new technologies and coming up with programming that utilizes them. I love learning new things, and can't wait to expand upon my knowledge when it comes to integrating technology into library services and programming.

  2. Great to meet you, Mary! I love that you want to bring books to the next generation and create new passions for them. They can use it, for sure. I've heard amazing things about the YouMedia space! I'm looking forward to learning with you this summer and seeing how creative you get with this blog :)

  3. Hi Mary! We have so much in common! I also loved reading Harry Potter and any other fantasy genre. Books are definitely a marvelous escape from every day life. I just finished reading last month's book in Reese's book club, Romantic Comedy, but I also have a hard time keeping up with each monthly book. What has been favorite book(s) from her book club? Some of mine have been Seven Days in June, Eleanor Oliphant is completely fine, and Group to name a few. I look forward to your upcoming blogs!

    2. Diba, Thanks for your comments. I would have to say my favorite book club book was Daisy Jones & the Six. I loved the interview style that Taylor Jenkins Reid wrote in. I am now a huge Taylor Jenkins Reid fan, and eagerly await news of upcoming works!
